What is Determined in an Overnight, In-Lab Sleep Study?
Overnight polysomnography is a fancy term used to describe a sleep study that is completed in the Sleep Center. It is a non-invasive test that monitors your sleep patterns, brain waves, muscle movements, breathing, respiratory effort, heart rate, oxygen level. During this test, you will be monitored by a trained sleep technologist throughout the night who will tend to your needs and ensure test accuracy.
Afterwards, our sleep experts analyze the data collected during the study to identify the presence or severity of sleep disorders including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome or periodic limb movement disorder, and parasomnias such as sleepwalking, sleep talking, night terrors, REM Behavior Disorder and more.
What should I expect during an Overnight Sleep Study?
- Arrival: You typically arrive in the evening about an hour or so before your usual bedtime at our private sleep center
- Hookup: A sleep technologist will greet you and explain the process. The tech will spend about 45 to 60 minutes attaching the sensors and wires needed to monitor your sleep.
- Sleep: You will sleep in your own pajamas while being monitored. The technologist will be available to assist you at any point during your stay with us. If the study detects severe obstructive sleep apnea, a technician may fit you with a CPAP mask partway through the night to determine the appropriate machine settings.
- Morning: The study usually ends about 8 hours later when the sensors are removed. You are done! Go home or to work as usual.
- Results: A Board-Certified Sleep Physician will provide the Test Interpretation within 48 hours of test completion. A comprehensive review of the test results and treatment recommendations will be scheduled with one of our experienced providers to answer all of your questions. This may be completed in your choice of a virtual or face-to-face appointment for your convenience.
